Inheritance advice

Answers to your questions about inheritance law in Switzerland, last wills and testaments, inheritance tax, statutory entitlement and more.

There are few legal topics with as many myths surrounding it as inheritance law. Who inherits how much and when? How big are the statutory entitlements? Does property have to be sold, if one partner passes away? Does inheritance law incorporate cohabitation? When is a last will and testament invalid? What can be settled in a marriage contract? Question upon question and the right answers are usually not easy to find. Misconceptions are spread, uncertainty sets in and worry follows.
It is our goal to eliminate this uncertainty by offering comprehensive advice on all subjects surrounding marriage and inheritance law. We can help you shape your last will and implement it. We can help find a solution to every situation by showing you what legal possibilities you have and what to watch out for when, for instance, creating a last will and testament. If your family or financial situation warrants a marriage and inheritance contract, then we can create the document for you and accompany you through the registration process at the notary or inheritance office, according to the laws of the county in which you live.
We offer inheritance advice in our offices in Schaffhausen or if requested in the comfort of your own home. Our field of activity includes the counties of Schaffhausen, Zurich and Thurgau but we also welcome clients from other areas.

What you need to know about inheritance tax in Switzerland
The taxation of inheritance and gifts is regulated by the individual cantons of Switzerland. There are as many different regulations as there are cantons. Contact us for more information about inheritance tax where you live.
Is your spouse fully covered if you assign usufruct to them?
Mr. Weber leaves his wife and their two mutual daughters. Mr. Weber was the owner of real estate. He had an inheritance contract made for him and his wife, in which he assigned her usufruct to his whole estate. His reason for doing so, was that his wife should then be able to stay in the family home. If this scenario seems familiar to you, or if you wish for further information about usufruct in Switzerland then contact us for more information.

Which legal measures can I take, in order to plan my estate? What are the advantages of an inheritance contract? Why should so called 'chain-wills' be avoided? Do wishes concerning a burial belong in a last will and testament? We have answers to these and many more questions.
